Sonia is a tenacious and compelling publicist and fundraiser who has represented: Youth Empowerment Mission, Metropolitan Black Bar Association, National Bar Association, Medgar Evers College, New York Association of Black Journalists, United States Tennis Association Eastern Section and The Network Journal. She has handled fundraising for Legal Services of New York and publicity-community education for NYC Department of Health Diabetes Prevention and Control Program.
She executes publicity, fundraising, corporate sponsorship sales for clients’ awards events; while securing media coverage, gift bag items, keynote speakers, event hosts, honorees, celebrity appearances and entertainment. She is a freelance reporter for News Corporation owned publication- Caribbean Life, where her work is published under her byline.
Sonia frequently works with event planners with exclusive focus on fundraising, so the event generates a break-through profit margin, even after fees and related costs are absorbed. On smaller projects she works closely with the client on all aspects of the production, eliminating the need for an event planner.
Her profit driven sales background includes positions at WFAN Sports Radio, WWRL Radio, New York Daily News, WBLS/WLIB Radio, The Network Journal magazine, Black Enterprise magazine and The Bureau of National Affairs, a publisher of legislative information.
Sonia has been recognized with sales awards by former employers, a “visionary” award from the Caribbean American Chamber of Commerce & Industry, and most recently was honored by two local organizations for community service.
Her distinguished strength at establishing and developing corporate relationships at the decision level places her in a position of influence. She understands and respects the importance of delivering value to funding sources based on their goals and types of non-profit groups they target.
Sonia studied Journalism at Long Island University- Brooklyn Campus. She was a volunteer Learning Leader in the New York City Public Schools, teaching Middle-School students how to gather and report news, and how to sell advertising space in the student newspaper. She has accompanied students on scheduled sales calls to local merchants. She volunteers with Inner City Little League Baseball and Jeuness Track Club in a publicity & fundraising capacity; and frequently speaks to groups of at-risk youth. She is a former “Big Sister” in the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization. She has also volunteered with Reebok & Venus and Serena Williams executing a tennis clinic designed to introduce inner-city kids the sport. She is a willing, passionate and committed mentor to students. She volunteers at her church; First Presbyterian of Brooklyn.
Her late parents Roy Wilson, CPA and Cecelia Wilson, RN raised Sonia and her siblings Michael, Hyacinth and Ian with values firmly rooted in integrity, common-decency, character and education. Her daughter Kimberly, son-in-law Sharif and grandchildren Yazmin Sharif and Laila are a source of personal pride; and the center of her life.
